We have an interesting federal election coming up in Australia- both the leaders of the major political parties (John Howard and Kevin Rudd) claim to be Christians. More interesting is the reponse by some to question the increasing influence of 'religion' in politics and seek to seperate church and state.

I think this is really exciting Very Happy stereotypical ideas are being shaken and there is real opportunity for the church to speak about issues in the wider community. I believe that Christians have a duty of care to pay attention to our political processes and get involved as much as they can can to use this God ordained institution of government to bring about positive change in lives of people in our community.

What do you think about this - are you ready to bring your Christianity to the polling booth? How will this influence the way you vote?

The one thing that has always confused me is this obsession with maintaining a separation between Church and State. I am not sure where or when this idea came about. Can anyone shed some light on the subject for me?

To answer your question about using my Christian values to help with my voting decisions. I would say yes, I place my Christians values on the top of the list when deciding candidates. I also place a lot of weight to the social impact to any debate. Our current Prime Minister John Howard seems to want to be in charge of an economy, which is an important part of a country, but is not the whole country. I feel this has caused certain areas to slide.

I also miss the big visions previous Prime Minister's had (not all of them however). There was always something they tried to make Australia number one in, I feel this desire to be the best in one or many areas sorely lacking from the current administration. When you take a look at all the other Party's I can't say anyone else is really selling the idea Australia can achieve great things either.

With the election period not quite started yet, I hope someone will come out of the pack with some big ideas for the future of Australia.

Matt
